A free trial is useful when you can answer one question at the end: should we trust this software with this part of customer service? Clicking through a demo and sending “hello” to the bot will not tell you much.

Several AI customer service platforms offer trial or free evaluation entry points. Start with SmartReply, Freshdesk, Tidio, or Help Scout, depending on your workflow. Review what each offer includes before signing up. A free inbox and a trial of an AI agent may have different limits.

What should an AI customer service trial include?

It should let you evaluate answers from your own information, your required channel, and the route to a human. If the trial excludes a feature you need, ask for a guided demonstration of that feature. Do not count a sales description as a completed test.

SmartReply's pricing page currently offers a 14 day trial. Check the current terms, credits, billing method, and cancellation process when you sign up. This article was reviewed on November 4, 2026. Other vendors' evaluation terms can change.

Before the trial: define a pass

Choose one job, such as answering product questions on Instagram or handling shipping policy questions in website chat. Write down what the team does today, how often the question appears, and how much review the new system can reasonably need.

  • Pick the channel and make sure you can connect it.
  • Gather current policies and product facts.
  • Choose sample questions and write the facts a correct answer must include.
  • Set a clear route to a person for questions the system cannot finish.
  • Record the trial end date, usage allowance, and first possible charge.

Test privately before enabling live automation

In SmartReply, use the Prompt Assistant and Sandbox workflow to check replies. Ask for a test that does not contact a real customer and wait for the completed result. Account permissions and AI credits still apply.

If you prefer working in ChatGPT, open the SmartReply plugin and follow the connection guide. The connection can help with supported inspection and testing tasks. Installing it does not start a SmartReply subscription or automatically enable your channels.

Measure the work left for your team

Record whether each answer is accurate, whether the request is completed, and how long a person spends checking or repairing it. Record an escalation separately from a failure. A correct handoff can be the best result for a policy exception.

When you try a limited live workflow, review repeat contacts as well as the first response. A fast answer that makes the customer ask again creates work later. Do not judge success only by the number of replies generated.

Make the decision from the test

At the end, keep the test results, actual usage, estimated monthly cost, and unresolved gaps in one place. Continue only if the workflow meets your requirements and someone owns ongoing review. If one feature is still unproven, resolve that gap before expanding.
