Most AI customer service software looks similar until you ask it to do a specific job. A product question under an ad, a return request in your helpdesk and an order change in TikTok Shop can all need different connections and permissions.
Before you compare platforms, write down where the work starts and what a finished result looks like. That is more useful than counting AI features.
This guide is published by SmartReply. We include our own product and explain when another setup may make sense. Vendor details were reviewed on November 4, 2026. These are documented capabilities, not results from a performance test.
Start with the work you want to remove
Take a sample of recent conversations. Separate questions that need an answer from requests that need an action. Then record the channel and the information needed to finish each one.
- Product question: Find the right item and answer from current product information.
- Order status: Verify the order, check the available tracking and explain the next step.
- Return request: Apply the policy and complete or escalate the permitted action.
- Public complaint: Acknowledge the issue and move private details into support.
Ask each vendor to show one of your actual workflows using anonymized examples. A demo that writes a refund message does not establish that the tool can issue a refund through your integration.
Decide whether to keep your helpdesk
An AI layer can let your team keep its current routing, history and reporting. A new support workspace can make sense when the existing process creates more work than it saves. Compare both options before assuming a full migration is needed.
Ask who owns the conversation when the AI needs help. Your agents should have the information needed to continue without asking the customer to repeat everything. Include the cost of any helpdesk you keep in the budget.
Separate an answer from an action
A reply about a refund is not the same as a completed refund. Ask to see the permission, policy decision and result in the connected store. Test a request that should proceed and one that should stop.
Check the exact platform. TikTok comment management and TikTok Shop support are different jobs. A Shopify action does not establish support for another marketplace.

Use the same test for every vendor
Prepare a small set of questions with the expected result beside each one. Include something routine, something unclear and something the AI should pass to a person. Give each vendor the same approved information.
- Does the answer use the right product and policy?
- Can you see whether an action completed?
- Does an unknown answer reach the right person?
- Can you correct the instruction and test the change?
- Can you explain how this work will be billed?
You can start with our support test worksheet. Add questions from your own business. Do not judge a tool only on the easy examples supplied by its sales team.
Compare the total cost of running it
Include the subscription, usage, any required helpdesk, implementation and the time your team spends reviewing exceptions. Different billing units make headline prices hard to compare. Our chatbot pricing guide walks through the questions to ask.
Start with the channels where you have the most repeated work. Run a limited pilot and review accuracy, repeat contacts, staff time and cost together. A faster first reply is useful, but it is only one part of a resolved conversation.
